Let’s talk about your feelings(Peplau, Leininger and Purnell theories)
Therapeutic communication is the cornerstone of the health professional -patient’s relationship: This requires empathy, therapeutic communication’s skills, a holistic viewpoint, evidence based practice, a cultural beliefs and values’ self awareness (“ putting in hold our beliefs and values”) and a real passion for the patient centered care.
Examples of questions on therapeutic communication for the NCLEX:
- A patient or client is receiving chemotherapy and tells to the nurse" I think that may family would stop praying for me, because I am dying, and I am feeling tired about my family hope, the long therapies, etc
a) Have you discuss this thought and feeling with your family?
b) You are feeling tired that your family is praying for your cure.
c) You seems depressed that is frequent in patients with similar diagnosis.
d) You should explain your feeling to your family.
analysis: when the nurse repeats the patient or client's statement is showing that she/he is listening and understanding.
Option b is more therapeutic: You are feeling tired that your family is praying for your cure (La option b es mas terapéutica y si se tiene dudas,se puede analizar cada opción como escogiendo la más terapéutica)
Reflecting (refleccionando), seeking or gathering information (buscando más información), making observation or verbalizing the nurse's perception for example saying" you seems that your are tired, or sad...Are you uncomfortable with? ...(haciendo una observación o diciendo con palabras lo que percibe la enfermera/o es otro tipo de clarificacion)
